Part of the Efficient Consumer Response initiative, the Sustainable Distribution Group is spearheading a drive to save food & grocery industry mileage in three areas;

  • Working together to drive improvements in transport networks
  • Offsetting food miles through effective consolidation practices to balance the need for greater flexibility without driving additional miles
  • Measuring industry performance through standard approaches

Industry savings from the start

Initiatives will result in a saving equivalent to removing 800 lorries from Britain’s roads.

Early successes are being achieved through ECR UK. In what we believe to be a world first, our group of leading food and consumer goods companies have made good progress in terms of removing road miles.

Initiatives such as sharing vehicles and more efficient warehousing networks will result in the industry saving 53 million miles of travel by the end of 2008 alone - equivalent to removing 800 lorries from Britain’s roads – and conserving 23 million litres of diesel fuel per year.
