A free guide studying the relationship between nutrition objectives and environmental sustainability

  • Starts to explore the possible impact of activities aimed at achieving nutritional objectives on environmental sustainability.
  • Insights into awareness in industry and food-related organisations of the impact of nutritional improvements on the environment.

Environmental sustainability is becoming an issue of increasing importance to consumers, joining health and nutrition as a driver of purchasing behaviour. Consumers demand that foods are good for them, but also that they do not adversely impact the environment.

However, it is possible that in attempting to improve either nutrition or environmental sustainability the other may be affected. IGD’s Industry Nutrition Strategy Group therefore asked IGD to undertake a preliminary study to see whether current nutritional objectives could potentially compromise environmental sustainability.

The study involved interviews with a number of experts and key opinion leaders, and a survey of those working in the food industry or food-related organisations. The survey of opinions suggested that achieving nutritional goals could potentially impact environmental sustainability in a number of ways.

The study also found some awareness within organisations of the potential for nutritional goals to impact environmental sustainability, and in some cases practical ways to address issues had been sought. However, nutrition and sustainability functions generally did not appear to be well integrated.

The report contains information on

  • Background to the growth in importance of sustainability in food policy.
  • Current nutritional objectives outlined in government strategy and advice to consumers.
  • Views on the potential environmental impacts of activities to address nutritional objectives from the food industry and food-related organisations.
